The us has tons of rare earth ores, it's the refining the US lacks mostly because it's a nasty process that creates a lot of toxic waste.

I think the chat interface plays a huge role in this because LLMs are more than good enough to make you feel like you’re talking to another person, so coupling that with a user interface that was up until a few years ago pretty much exclusively used to talk to other people is a little problematic… it is essentially hijacking the emotional response of talking to a real person through texting.
